A railway driver is qualified as a Pilot, or an engineer, yet people are hesitant. Their job demands of good analytical and judgement skill just like any other job and they have to work much harder to attain the best position within their profession. They also known as Loco Pilot. He is the important person in executing the huge task of transporting nearly seventeen million passengers. No doubt that every person equally important for the safe journey of a train but in the end, it is the driver on whose sincerity the journey depends.
If a person is inducted as a pilot, then society talks about him/her proudly and the person also have enthusiasm towards the work. I wonder – would we have same enthusiasm in a person if he/she gets selected as a railway driver?
The answer would be NO. The reason behind this is that we look down upon the very term ‘Driver’ and consider it an undignified job. Qualification required for Train Driver
To become an engine driver in India one should be at least Matriculate plus ITI course in specified trades.
Minimum age of the aspiring candidate should be 18years and maximum age limit is 30 years.
How to become an Engine Driver?
- To become an engine driver in India one has to apply for the competitive exam to be held for the job whenever declared by any of the 17 RRBs of different zones in the Indian Railways.
- After clearing the RRB exam and getting the necessary training one usually begins his career as a diesel or electric loco assistant driver, where his job is mainly to check the state of the locomotive, help with all the auxiliary equipment as needed, and to call out the aspects of the signals. An assistant driver works as an assistant on goods trains, then on passenger trains, and finally on express trains.

Railway engineer deal with the design, construction and operation of all types of railway systems. Railway engineering encompasses a wide range of engineering disciplines, including civil engineering, computer engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, production engineering and industrial engineering. They are responsible for operating automated systems that propel trains.
What they do?
- They build new engines and carriages
- Repairing and replacement of parts
- Fitting out new carriages with upholstery, lighting, control panels and communication systems
- Make new parts
- Carry out regular maintenance checks on systems such as brakes and couplings
- They take apart and test mechanical, electrical and pneumatic systems
- Write reports and update maintenance record
- Operate locomotives used by train lines.
- Check trains for mechanical problems.
- Order parts for train.
- Load and unload freight.
- Ensure train adheres to timetable.
- Check weather conditions to halt or stop trains in case of severe weather.
- Take apart and test instruments.
- Inspect carts and parts for wear and tear.
Qualification for railway engineer
SCRA IS EXAM CONDUCTED BY UPSC FOR RAILWAY RECRUITMENT
Age criteria: minimum of 17 years & maximum 21 years of age till date
Education qualification: Intermediate or an equivalent Examination of a University or Board approved by the Government of India with Mathematics and at least one of the subjects Physics and Chemistry as subjects of the examination.
Higher Secondary (12 years) Examination under 10 plus 2 patterns of School Education with Mathematics and at least one of the subjects Physics and Chemistry as subjects of the examination.
Engineering candidates are employed in Indian railway through two modes:
1.Railway recruitment Board (RRB) Exam
You must be Intermediate qualified.
Age should be 17 to 21 years
SC/ST + 5 years
OBC + 3 years
PH + 10 years
You must be Indian.
2. IES exam conducted by UPSC
You must be graduate with BE or B. Tech in following stream from recognized university or its equivalent.
Electronics and Telecommunication
Your age should be 21 to 30 years
Age relaxation as per government norms.
SC/ST + 5 years
OBC + 3 years
PH + 10 years
You must be Indian.
